At the end of September this year, support for BackupAssist v7 will come to an end. You will still be able to use BackupAssist v7, but you will not receive any software updates or support.
This means it’s great time to consider upgrading. To help you do this, let’s go over some of the new features that you will get by moving from BackupAssist v7 to BackupAssist v9.
1. Improved Hyper-V Backups
System Protection backups of Microsoft Hyper-V hosts and guests are now easier due to the addition of custom Hyper-V backup setup screens.
2. Rapid VM Recovery
Rapid VM Recovery allows you to spin up a single guest from its backup destination to keep critical systems online. This interim solution takes only seconds, and provides business continuity. To learn more, see the Hyper-V Recovery guide.
3. On-Demand Analysis
BackupAssist now includes a feature that allows your backup destination to be checked when you create a backup job. The type of checks performed will be based on the destination selected.
4. The new Integrated Restore Console
The Integrated Restore Console replaces the BackupAssist Restore Console. The Integrated Restore Console provides a more consistent interface across restore types and has a new restore menu, that includes Hyper-V options when BackupAssist is installed on a Hyper-V environment.
5. BitLocker Encrypted backups
System Protection, File Protection and File Archiving backups will get BitLocker encryption as an option for removable drive destinations. To learn more, see our BitLocker encryption resource page.
6. Bootable Backup Media
A System Protection bare-metal backup on an external USB hard disk can be made into a Bootable Backup Media. The backup media can be used to boot into a RecoverAssist recovery environment and recover the server, without a separate boot disk. To learn more, see the System Recovery guide
7. Custom backup schemes
A custom backup scheme provides a set of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly scheduling options that can be used to make a detailed, customized backup schedule.
8. VHDX Data containers
BackupAssist now supports VHDX Data containers for Windows Server 2012 R1/R2. VHDX can support Data containers up to 62TB in size. To learn more, see the Data container resource page.
9 Backup verification
After each File Protection, File Archiving or System Protection backup job has run, BackupAssist will verify the backup. To learn more, see our backup verification resource page.
10. Improved Platform support
BackupAssist v9 will add support for:
- Windows 10
- Exchange Server 2016
- SQL Server 2016, which will be coming this year for v9
